NFL Clear Bag Policy: The 12x6x12 Rule and What Stadiums Add

The NFL sets one clear bag policy for its stadiums: a clear bag up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, a one-gallon clear freezer bag, or a small clutch up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Each stadium still publishes its own page. We have verified 30 of the 30 NFL stadiums we cover, and each one is listed below.

The NFL clear bag policy

The NFL's own page lists what you can carry in. It allows:

  • A bag made of clear plastic, vinyl or PVC, up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches
  • A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag, the Ziploc kind
  • A small bag that is not clear, up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches, which you can carry together with a clear bag

The page lists coolers, briefcases, non-clear backpacks, non-clear fanny packs, luggage and computer bags as prohibited, along with any non-clear bag larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches. It says exceptions are made for medically necessary items after proper inspection. The clear bag policy guide goes through it step by step, and the 12x6x12 guide shows the size.

What stadiums add beyond bags

The NFL page covers bags. Everything else is set stadium by stadium. At MetLife Stadium, for example, empty reusable bottles up to 20 ounces are allowed, but umbrellas and strollers are not. The item pages line up the stadiums we have verified: water bottles, cameras, strollers and umbrellas.

The page also says policies can change for an individual event, so a game and a concert at the same stadium can differ.

Questions about NFL rules

  1. The NFL page sets the policy for NFL stadiums, and each stadium publishes its own page too. We show a stadium's rule only after we have read that page and can link to it.

  2. A small bag that is not clear, up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches, is allowed together with a clear bag. A larger non-clear purse is not on the permitted list.

  3. The NFL page allows a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag as an alternative to a clear bag.

  4. The NFL page says exceptions are made for medically necessary items after proper inspection. A stadium's own page may describe the process differently, so contact the stadium before the game.
