Clear Bag Policy Explained for Stadiums, Arenas and Concerts

A clear bag policy means the bag you carry in must be see-through and under a set size. The NFL version allows one clear bag up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, plus a small non-clear clutch up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Not every venue uses it, so the venue page decides.

What counts as a clear bag

The NFL's wording is specific. A clear bag is made of clear plastic, vinyl or PVC. The NFL page also allows a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag, the Ziploc kind, as an alternative. It adds that no buckles, grommets, hardware or decoration may hide any part of the bag, and that a logo can sit on one side only.

Style does not matter as long as the bag is clear and inside the size limit. MetLife Stadium says a clear backpack that fits within 12 by 6 by 12 inches counts as your one clear bag. SoFi Stadium adds that it must be completely clear, with no tint, hologram, printed pattern or sticker.

Clear is not the rule everywhere

A clear bag policy is one way to set a bag rule, not the only way. Here is how the venues we have verified handle it, taken from their own pages.

Each row links to the venue page, where the exact wording and the source sit. Crypto.com Arena goes the other way: it lists clear bags among the bags it does not allow, and Wrigley Field bans clear backpacks too.

Clear does not mean any size

Clear only describes what the bag looks like. The number on the sign still decides. The NFL page lists clear bags only up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, so a bigger clear bag is not on the permitted list.

If you are unsure how big that is, the 12x6x12 bag size guide shows it next to a sheet of paper and next to the other limits we have verified.

The small bag you can carry beside it

The NFL page lets you carry a small bag that is not clear, up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches, with or without a handle or strap, together with a clear bag. MetLife's own page lists the same two options, so read its wording for your event. Soldier Field names wallets, wristlets, clutches and crossbody bags in that size.

Other venues handle this differently. Yankee Stadium allows one soft-sided bag up to 16 by 16 by 8 inches plus one smaller soft-sided personal item. United Center allows one small purse or personal bag up to 10 by 6 by 2 inches and no backpacks at all.

Medical items and other exceptions

The NFL page says exceptions are made for medically necessary items after proper inspection. Soldier Field allows medical bags once they have been screened and approved, and SoFi Stadium allows a diaper bag with medically necessary items, which gets extra screening and a bag tag.

United Center allows required medical equipment and asks that a medical bag over its size limit be at least two thirds full of medical supplies. MetLife's own guest policies page does not describe a separate medical bag process, so contact the venue before the event if you need one.

If your bag does not fit

Storage varies a lot. Yankee Stadium says there is no storage area for any items, and Madison Square Garden says there is no place to check bags or coats. MetLife's guest policies page does not describe bag storage. At the other end, SoFi Stadium has bag valets that charge a fee, Soldier Field rents gameday lockers for 10 dollars, credit card only, United Center points to Binbox lockers outside the arena, Crypto.com Arena rents Binbox lockers from 15 dollars, and Scotiabank Arena has a bag check for 25 dollars. Questions about clear bags

  1. No. MetLife Stadium, SoFi Stadium, Soldier Field, Lumen Field, Levi's Stadium, AT&T Stadium, Bank of America Stadium, Acrisure Stadium, Caesars Superdome and Nissan Stadium use the NFL size for clear bags, but Yankee Stadium asks for a soft-sided bag up to 16 by 16 by 8 inches and does not require clear. Madison Square Garden allows bags up to 22 by 14 by 9 inches in any style, Citi Field and Oracle Park allow 16 by 16 by 8 inches, and Chase Center allows any style up to 14 by 6 by 14 inches, and Toyota Center, Kaseya Center and Barclays Center allow only bags up to 10 by 6 by 2 inches, Ball Arena, Little Caesars Arena and Comerica Park only 4 by 6 by 1.5 inches, Delta Center 4 by 6 by 2 inches, Target Center and Truist Park 5 by 9 inches, and Raymond James Stadium only one clutch of 4.5 by 6.5 inches. FedExForum is the arena that goes furthest toward clear, allowing only clear bags up to 6 by 8 by 2 inches or a small wallet.

  2. The NFL page allows a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag as an alternative. That applies where a venue follows the NFL policy, so check the venue page first.

  3. No. At the venues we have verified, every bag is still inspected or screened before you go in.

  4. Not always. SoFi Stadium and MetLife say their policies can vary or change for an individual event, Yankee Stadium says other restrictions may apply to concerts, and Madison Square Garden says its prohibited list can vary by event. Check the event page.

  5. It depends. Soldier Field allows a clear diaper bag within 12 by 6 by 12 inches and bans non-clear ones. SoFi Stadium lists diaper bags as prohibited unless they hold medically necessary items. Check the page for the venue you are going to.
