12x6x12 Bag Size Guide: What Fits Under the Stadium Limit

A 12x6x12 bag is no more than 12 inches on two sides and 6 inches on the third, or 30.5 by 15.25 by 30.5 centimeters. The NFL uses it as the limit for a clear bag. It holds about 14 liters, and a sheet of letter paper fits flat inside it.

How it compares with other limits

A bag limit is three numbers, so it is hard to feel. Multiplied out, the difference between venues is large. These are the limits we have verified, smallest first.

The Yankee Stadium limit holds about 2.4 times as much as the clear bag limit, and the Disneyland limit holds about 7.5 times as much. The small clutch the NFL allows beside a clear bag, 4.5 by 6.5 inches, is listed with two sizes only, so we leave it out.

What fits inside

A sheet of US Letter paper, 8.5 by 11 inches, lies flat across the 12 by 12 face of the bag. That is a handy way to picture the two big sides. The thin side, 6 inches, is what catches people out.

The NFL treats a one-gallon clear freezer bag as an alternative to a clear bag of this size, which gives a second way to picture it. A bag can look small and still be over, so measure yours packed.

How to measure your bag

Do it before you leave home, with the bag packed the way you will carry it:

  • Measure the widest, deepest and tallest points on the outside, not the inside
  • Include outside pockets and anything stuffed into them
  • Press the bag flat the way you would carry it, then measure again
  • If you are within half an inch of a limit, pick a smaller bag

The NFL page does not say whether straps count, and a venue's staff make the call at the gate. Leaving a little room is the easy way to avoid the argument.

Which venues use it

Of the venues we have verified, MetLife Stadium, SoFi Stadium, Soldier Field, Lumen Field, Levi's Stadium and AT&T Stadium, Bank of America Stadium, Acrisure Stadium and Caesars Superdome, Arrowhead Stadium, Lambeau Field, Lincoln Financial Field, Hard Rock Stadium and Mercedes-Benz Stadium use it, because they follow the NFL clear bag policy. Highmark Stadium, Empower Field at Mile High, Allegiant Stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium, Ford Field, M&T Bank Stadium, NRG Stadium, Paycor Stadium, EverBank Stadium, U.S. Bank Stadium, State Farm Stadium, Northwest Stadium and Huntington Bank Field do too, and Raymond James Stadium goes further with a no bag rule that allows one 4.5 by 6.5 inch clutch. Gillette Stadium is stricter: a clear bag of 12 by 12 by 6 inches or a small wristlet only. Nissan Stadium uses the same size, written as 12 by 12 by 6. The NFL page sets it for NFL stadiums, and we add each stadium to the NFL stadium list as we verify it.

Other venues pick their own number. Crypto.com Arena, United Center, Toyota Center and Kaseya Center allow far smaller bags, and Yankee Stadium, Rogers Centre, Wrigley Field, Madison Square Garden and the Disney parks all allow far bigger ones, as the table above shows. Chase Center sits just above it at 14 by 6 by 14 inches, in any style. Wembley Stadium is the close one: its A4 limit holds a little less than the clear bag. Dodger Stadium and BC Place write the same size as 12 by 12 by 6 inches for their clear bags, and Fenway Park allows that size in any style.
